OSM FACT SHEET U.S. Department of the Interior Office of Surface Mining November 13, 1997 OSM AWARDS HOPI TRIBE $28,000 ABANDONED MINE LANDS GRANT The Interior Department's Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSM) has awarded the Hopi Indian Tribe a $28,000 grant to assist in funding the tribe's abandoned mine lands (AML) reclamation program on Tribal lands in Arizona. Legislation was enacted in 1987 authorizing Indian Tribes to operate their own AML reclamation programs, while OSM continues to administer the federal regulatory program for coal mine reclamation on Indian Lands and the AML fund.
