OSM FACT SHEET October 25, 2000 OSM AWARDS NAVAJO TRIBE $4,270,653 ABANDONED MINE LANDS GRANT The Interior Department's Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSM) has awarded the Navajo Indian Tribe a $4,270,653 grant to assist in funding the tribe's abandoned mine land (AML) reclamation program on tribal lands in Arizona and New Mexico. Legislation was enacted in July 1987 authorizing Indian Tribes to operate their own AML reclamation programs, while OSM continues to administer the federal regulatory program for coal mine reclamation on Indian Lands and the AML Fund. -DOI- For additional information about the grant contact Madeline Roanhorse (520) 871-7593.
