              OSM AWARDS HOPI TRIBE $200,000 
              ABANDONED MINE LANDS GRANT

    The Interior Department's Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and
Enforcement (OSM) announced today that the Hopi Indian Tribe has been awarded
a $200,000 grant for its Moenkopi abandoned mine land construction project.

    Legislation was enacted in July 1987 authorizing Indian Tribes to operate
their own AM]_, reclamation programs, while OSM continues to administer the
federal regulatory program for coal mine reclamation on Indian Lands and the AML
Fund.
